Livestream Operational

So! Now that I bought more RAM for my computer, I decided to make a Livestream-channel. I tested it today, unfortunately there was a disconnect so the session was lost, maybe the video was too long because it had run for almost 4 hours... But otherwise it worked and I will probably try to start streaming whenever I can, feel free to come and take a look -> Vablo Learns to Draw (hopefully!)

Year 2012 - Time to start getting things done?

Hello dear readers. It's year 2012 and school has also started. We're going to have webdesign and animation + multimedia starting and the model drawing is continuing, I'm feeling quite good about it all. It's also nice to see fellow students and get the drawing club thingie going again as I've been waiting for that.

I've been pondering on an idea of doing at least one photo or a movie screenshot study a day to really kick my own ass for the sake of improvement. I think I will also dig into different techniques to see if I can find anything interesting, time to start getting shit done.

We gotta finish a game project for school before January ends, so I guess I won't have that much time to do much else than the project stuff and the daily studies until we get the project done.

Enough of blabbering, here we go. So, a couple of movie studies, sketching, testing out smoother style (trying to understand the form also) and a previous picture I think I'll try to render better, still in progress.

Ps. I'll probably ditch the last one. When I look at the changes I made it doesn't look as good as the painting before. The shadows look better in a way (not so dirty), but she is too healthy/lively. What do you guys think?

Studies! All from photoreference, everytime I start doing these I remember how important it actually is... Colors are so hard to get right, so practice, practice and once again practice.

Hello everyone. I had quite a nice weekend in Turku with awesome fellow artists and we actually managed to do two collabs. We also managed to get quite wasted during the painting process, really fun stuff. :D So the two first pics are painted by Parsakoira, myself, Rotor and Keppo.

Then I have some drawings from the model drawing class, random sketching/studying and some stuff for weekly themes at an art collective blog Fishfruit. The spider mecha is concept art for a schoolproject, still need to animate the robot.

Ughh... I finally managed to photograph my sketchbook and get the files to my computer, so prepare for checking through quite an amount of doodles. Most of the stuff is somewhat older, but there are some new stuff too. I need to start doing more sketching with traditional ways.

Also, the pictures from the last model drawing session, human body consists of such weird stuff when you observe it more closely. I really feel I'm actually learning something in that course, which is f-ing great.

This morning we had an Excel lesson, and after that some freetime logo design in Illustrator for a task. I think I'm not the only one in our class who doesn't really care that much for Illustrator and well... I think picture, or in this case animation tells more than thousand words could ever, so here's an animation by my classmate Lukas which greatly depicts the feelings of the most of us.

Yesterday we had a model drawing class at school, and damn it was great. There's really a big difference drawing a live model than from photo reference. Still, drawing in general feels hard at the moment for some reason. Maybe I should relax for a while, play some games and watch good movies instead of stressing about it.

Phew, a little update for the blog though I haven't drawn that much in the meantime.

I've been travelling lately, a well spent weekend with my friends at a small island at Ähtäri and after that I went to Nivala with my girlfriend to visit her relatives. I got home yesterday and tomorrow it's time to pack my backbag again and head to Mikkeli and Jurassic Rock 2011. A fine ending for this summer (even though the train tickets are so freaking expensive), since my school starts on next tuesday.

Hi guys.

Summer is finally coming and I have no problem with that. Spring has been quite a busy time for me with entrance exams, pretasks and so many other things... Fortunately I have only one entrance exam left which is for fine arts department at TAMK, so not that much pressure at the moment. I'm also working on an album cover for a band Greenrose Faire and graphical elements for Ghost Voyage's website at the moment, go check them out!

And yeah, any StarCraft 2 fans out there, particularly Terran fans?
Because here's something for you. Also, a few progress shots of the picture and the final painting of course, this was a looot of fun.

I got my pretask for school done, only one more to go. Commissions and projects are taking some time, lot of things to do... And yeah, Dominance War V starts soon and I'm anxious to participate in that! Not really expecting that much knowing the skill level there, but hey, what's the loss.

I've been trying to take some "me-time" after that pretask, so here are a lot of sketches, some concepts on mining mechs, too much resemblance with StarCraft's SCV in the first one I think. Also some random scene about a thief who has stolen something valuable or maybe he is trespassing, need to work on that one!

Blah, I've been quite lazy lately, I need to speed up things. Here are tonight's offerings, three sketchy studies from movie reference. I tried not to spend too much time on each of these, the point of these studies was to observe light and especially colours. I've noticed I almost everytime tend to push my colours much more saturated than they really need to be, the colours in the real world are rarely that intense and the changes of colors are very subtle. Of course it depends on the scene and the style you're working on too, but I try to achieve at least some sort of realism in my paintings.

Personally I liked this movie quite a lot, it has a much cruder look to it than most of the same genre. The movie also includes great design work from Weta Workshop. Can you name it? (and if you can't, please watch it)

I've been quite busy lately with Kitchen's Secret Santa-thingie, but I'll throw in a couple of finished works.

The first one was for a competition focused in monster design, though I didn't win it. I think the monster is maybe too generic, it was fun to paint nevertheless. The second one is something random inspired by Andree Wallin, one of my favorite artists. Oh, I also got my copy of "Digital Art Masters Volume 5" and it has some serious kickass-renderings in it.

So, now it's time for my second painting with acrylics ever, the first one was more of an experiment... It's taken with my camera so the quality might be a bit off, though I tried to fix it with Photoshop.

Painting with acrylics is a lot of fun and you really can't make fatal mistakes, because you can always paint another layer on top once the bottom one has dried. You'll probably see more of these coming too, I'd like to try a more detailed painting next time.

Some sketches: First two heavily inspired by the movie The Gladiator (also did some colorstudy, it was fun and I should practice that more), some practice on female anatomy, a quick "I really don't know what the hell this is gonna be"-painting and a demon sketched in a train from Jyväskylä to Tampere. (traditional art, whaaat?!)

So much stuff going on, I have hardly had any time for sketching or painting. Just moved to Tampere, and working consumes some time. So many contests going on, I somehow finished my piece for Blizzard's fanart contest (though I can't show it in public yet) and now I'm working on a monster design.
